In this painting, I kept the color subdued to keep with the tone of the piece. Why? Because after finishing pools fencers don't tend to feel dynamic or explosive- like in my bold colored paintings (see gallery).  Experienced fencers know that the pools are just warmup- at best to give you a good seating going into direct eliminations.

So the cool fencer justs want to check his/her score, hope the Director tallies the indicators right so they can relax for minute..go to the bathroom, eat, hydrate and get their mental game tight before the upcoming direct elimination bout(s).

WIP-"Indicators"-Part 2/3

These young epee fencers are patiently taking turns with the director to check their score and indicator points at the end of the pool.

Stage 2-work in progress

I like it mostly but the darkness bothers me a little. I will try and punch up the color just a tad in the final version.-Stay Tuned!

Work in Progress-"Indicators"-Part 1/3

One of the fun, yet frustrating, aspects of this painting was the fencing shoes. ..what fencer doesn't recognized those German Adidas. So I had to get those right. The small format is a bit tricky. One stroke or touch and every thing is off. Happily, that can also work in the opposite direction.

(For my non-fencing viewers, "Director" refers to the referee of the fencing bout.)
