This painting is from my "Fencing Strip" series. I was at the 2006 Richmond North American Cup (NAC) and was watching Doris Willette fencing and just started sketching. All gold medal bouts at that NAC were fenced on Strip 41. The action was so fast and this was a finals bout so it was really crowded among the spectators. All I really had room to do was a small sketch to capture some of the action.

Later I added the paint. Actually, I used my new set of watersoluble crayons...they are amazing!

In this painting, I kept the color subdued to keep with the tone of the piece. Why? Because after finishing pools fencers don't tend to feel dynamic or explosive- like in my bold colored paintings (see gallery).  Experienced fencers know that the pools are just warmup- at best to give you a good seating going into direct eliminations. 

So the cool fencer justs want to check his/her score, hope the Director tallies the indicators right so they can relax for minute..go to the bathroom, eat, hydrate and get their mental game tight before the upcoming direct elimination bout(s).

Work in Progress-"Indicators"-Part 1/3

One of the fun, yet frustrating, aspects of this painting was the fencing shoes. ..what fencer doesn't recognized those German Adidas. So I had to get those right. The small format is a bit tricky. One stroke or touch and every thing is off. Happily, that can also work in the opposite direction.

(For my non-fencing viewers, "Director" refers to the referee of the fencing bout.)

"Sabre USA" was commissioned by Monisha Tasker. The image was based on photo and strip sketches of her son, Nakul. Tasker became my first sport-fencing painting collector when she purchased the painting, "Abstract Epee". The Taskers are a sport-fencing family with a love for all three weapons...like ME!

"Epee Revolution" was a tricky little painting to execute using my "drip and pour" technique. Using this style, I usually like a little more room to let the paint flow and spread on its on. I use a fluid acrylic paint modified with gel medium and that I pour and drip on the canvas. When doing a figure in this manner it can be tricky because the paint wants to spread out as it dries.

The title came about because I kept visualizing turning spheres (circles) while painting and they came through a little in the background plus at the time I was painting this one, I wasn't yet a epee fencer. I was only a foil fencer at the time but I kept meeting epee fencers who liked my art and asking for more epee images. So I started checking out the epee fencers on the strip at the competitions and they looked like they were having so much fun! Long story short.. I still fence foil but Epee Rocks! Let the Revolution Begin!

"Sabre Ready" began as study for my painting "Sabre Girl". I started this painting a while back at the 2005 Nationals Championship in Sacramento, CA. I was painting small watercolors and selling pretty well but this one took a while to get the mask and stance just right. I'm particularly happy with the lettering of the word "Sabre". To get that affect I used masking fluid to write the words and near the end of the work I removed it and then adjusted the temperature of that area to complement the rest of the work. I'm also pleased at the way the metallic vest (lame) turned out. I used Daniel Smith Silver Metallic Pigment to glaze over the blue area of the vest.
